Here you will find information on the legal situation in Belgium and bMediation. bMediation, founded in 1998 under the name BBMC, is the fruit of an initiative of the Brussels Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the French Bar of Brussels and the Dutch Bar of Brussels. The Belgian Institute for Company Lawyers, the Brussels Business Federation and the Vlaamse Organisatie voor Bemiddeling en Arbitrage are also founding partners.

The Belgium Mediation Act (Loi modifiant le Code judiciaire en ce qui concerne la m├ędiation) came into force on 21th February 2005. The law makes a distinction between voluntary (or conventional) mediation and court-ordered mediation (to which the parties turn when judicial proceedings are already being dealt with).

bMediation works with mediators who are all bMediation certified. They subscribe to a code of ethics and to bMediation's rules.

Panel of Mediators

A bMediation certification is necessary to be part of the bMediation group of mediators. To obtain this bMediation certification, the mediator has to have successfully undergone mediator training and take an exam. The mediator also has to be part of the bMediation network and needs to contribute to the organisation's objectives.
